This is the fourth-generation Grand Cherokee and it’s been on sale since 2010, but it hasn’t been without its problems. There have been many issues with electrical glitches affecting the gearbox and infotainment system, although most of these will have been rectified under warranty. However, Jeep dealers don’t have the best reputation, which can be a frustrating part of ownership.

While neither Jeep nor the Grand Cherokee has featured in our Driver Power customer satisfaction survey in recent years, in 2016 the company finished 11th out of 32 car makers. The Grand Cherokee itself came an impressive ninth out of 150 cars, with owners praising its performance, practicality and comfort - though it ranked in the bottom third of the table for reliability. Fellow FCA brands Alfa Romeo and Fiat – which with Jeep shares technology and some dealers – finished 2nd and 15th, respectively, in the 2019 survey.

Euro NCAP has tested the Grand Cherokee, although it was only awarded four stars, which many drivers might consider a bit of a worry, as other luxury and premium brands routinely net five stars. Adult protection was reasonable at 81 percent, child safety was 69 percent, while pedestrian safety scored just 45 percent. Figures in the same categories for the Mercedes M Class, tested in 2012, are 96, 75 and 60 percent.

That said, the Grand Cherokee does feature kit such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitors and a forward collision monitor to help keep you out of trouble.

Warranty

The Grand Cherokee comes with a generous five-year/75,000-mile warranty. Warranty cover from BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen for the X5, GLE and Touareg is three years with unlimited miles. Jeep also throws in free roadside assistance for five years.

Servicing

Jeep offers a number of servicing packages marketed under the Mopar brand. The Easy Care and Oil Care packs can both be specified at time of purchase.
