New MG4 XPower revealed: the most powerful MG ever

The MG4 XPower comes with 429bhp and supercar-baiting pace

The MG4 might be a budget, family friendly EV but MG thought it was ripe for some performance tweaks and has created the new MG4 XPower.

MG has now revealed its new all-electric hot hatch in full, the car starting from £36,495. It’ll be available to order from July and the public can view the new car in person at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed

Performance figures were previously leaked but now we can confirm the MG4 XPower’s specifications in full. It uses the same Modular Scalable Platfom as the standard MG4, but there’s a dual-motor setup with 429bhp and 600Nm of torque going to all four wheels - 204bhp heading to the front and 231bhp for the rear.

This means the XPower shaves four seconds off the MG4’s 0-62mph time, taking just 3.8 seconds to complete the sprint before topping out at 124mph. To make sure the extra power is utilised, MG gives the XPower 25 per cent stiffer suspension, stiffer anti-roll bars and more responsive steering. A new ‘Dynamic Cornering Control System’ has been developed especially for the XPower with a locking electric differential and torque vectoring across each wheel.

The regenerative braking system has also been recalibrated to allow for one pedal driving. There’s even a launch control mode to showcase the car’s performance credentials.

The boost in performance is combined with a more subtle approach to the exterior with orange ‘XPower’ brake calipers, a two-tone black roof, 18-inch alloys bespoke to the XPower and new trim accents. The Racing Green colour option is also new for the XPower.

As you’d expect, efficiency takes a hit with the XPower model offering a WLTP range of 239 miles, compared with 281 miles for the standard Trophy. A 10-80% charge is possible in 35 minutes thanks to 150kW rapid charging.

Inside we’ll see a similar layout to the standard MG4 models with a 10.25-inch touchscreen. It’ll also get Alcantara sports seats and metal pedals. Boot space will reduce from 363 litres to 289 litres - probably due to a bigger rear electric motor.

Given the performance increase and additional kit, the £36,495 MG4 XPower's price increase over the £32,495 Trophy looks like decent value, with few cars of any type matching it for power per pound.
