New BMW X5 spied

Our spies have caught the all-new BMW X5 testing, ahead of its arrival in showrooms next year

These pictures show a heavily disguised prototype of the next BMW X5, which will rival the Mercedes M-Class and Audi Q7 when it arrives in showrooms in 2013.

The all-new X5 will get a larger version of BMW’s familiar kidney-grille, sharper LED daytime running lights and a higher waistline. It's also likely to feature more defined, crisp lines - similar to those seen on the new BMW X3 and 3 Series range - for a more aggressive look.

On the inside, an all-new dash display will feature the latest version of its iDrive infotainment menu. A head-up display will also be available, as will traffic-sign recognition, park assist and a night vision feature.

The X5 will be built on a longer wheelbase for improved interior space, and will be available with self-levelling air suspension, which will allow multiple ride height settings and an off-road mode for four-wheel-drive versions. It will share its basic suspension set-up with the smaller X3.

Thanks to further use of high-strength steel to reduce weight and BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology – which includes stop-start, low rolling resistance tyres and aero changes – this will be the most economical X5 to date.

The current range of engines, which includes a 3.0-litre diesel and 4.4-litre V8, will be carried over to the new model. A new four-cylinder diesel engine will go head-to-head with the new Mercedes ML250 CDI, while M Performance versions and an X5M will top the range.

The all-new BMW X5 is expected to go on sale in 2013, and will be priced from £45,000.
