SsangYong Tivoli SUV facelifted for 2020

The SsangYong Tivoli SUV has been updated with two new engines and an interior overhaul

The SsangYong Tivoli has received a facelift for 2020, intended to keep the budget SUV competitive against new competition such as the new Nissan Juke and Skoda Kamiq. A redesign on the outside, new technology on the inside and new engines under the bonnet are all part of the update.

At the front, the lower section of the front apron changes with three-piece fog lamps now sitting on both sides, while the small grille section running between the headlights is larger and features some faux chrome detailing. The changes at the rear are less noticeable, with a very subtly different rear bumper and new tail light signatures.

Inside, the central fascia has been completely updated and is home to a new eight-inch central infotainment system, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The vents move up to the top of the dashboard, while there are new heater controls and a new gear selector on automatic models.

Some high-spec Tivoli models are now available with digital instrumentation too. The new digital instrument panel uses a 10.25-inch LCD screen with selectable display modes, and is standard equipment on the new range-topping Tivoli Ultimate.

As for engines, SsangYong has introduced two new petrol motors, while updating the Tivoli’s diesel option. The base engine is a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol developing 126bhp and 230Nm torque, sending power to the front wheels from a six-speed manual gearbox. SsangYong claims fuel consumption of 40.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 158g/km, marking an improvement over the old 1.6-litre unit.

Those wanting more power can have the other new petrol engine, which is a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. This makes 161bhp and 280Nm torque, and is offered with an automatic gearbox optionally. SsangYong claims 39.2mpg for the manual version, dipping to 36.7 for those who choose the automatic.

The 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine carries over from the pre-facelift Tivoli, but now develops 134bhp and 324Nm torque and is available with either a manual or automatic transmission. The manual version is a little less economical than before, at 50.4mpg. The automatic fares better though, claiming 47.1mpg.

Elsewhere, new safety equipment arrives in the form of Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Front Vehicle Start Alert, Driver Attention Alert, Emergency Stop System, and Safety Distance Alert. All of these features are standard on every model, alongside six airbags and a four-star Euro-NCAP safety rating.

Prices for the revised Tivoli start from £13,995. The entry-level car is badged Tivoli EX, and uses the new 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Alongside the standard safety features, buyers get a  DAB Radio with iPod & Bluetooth connectivity, 16-inch steel wheels with covers, manual air conditioning and cruise control.

The 1.2-litre engine is also the only engine available in the mid-spec Ventura model, priced from £16,995. This adds newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels, black faux leather and cloth seats with front seat heaters, a seven-inch integral touchscreen with a reversing camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a heated leather steering wheel, leather gear knob, a seventh airbag, floor mats, mini spare wheel, luggage cover, LED front fogs, roof rails, keyless start, automatic lights and wipers, plus front and rear parking sensors.

Tivoli Ultimate models are available with either the 163bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine or the 134bhp diesel, and are priced from £21,495. The basic specification is similar to the Ventura, but alongside the more powerful engines it adds items such as 18-inch diamond cut style wheels, leather seats, power-folding mirrors and the new 10.25-inch digital instrument panel.
